Blood banks overwhelmed with donations following Bondi shooting in Australia

Blood banks have received an overwhelming response in the wake of the tragedy on Bondi Beach, breaking two new national records.

In just the first 24 hours after the Bondi massacre, a whopping 50,000 appointments were booked and a total of 7810 donations of blood, plasma and platelets were made from across the nation, with 1300 of those coming from first time donors.

Aussies have continued to step up for their fellow compatriots.

Since the horrific events at Bondi gripped the nation, a further 41,196 appointments and 18,210 donations have been made.

“We’d like to thank everyone who has visited our centres or made an appointment to donate in the past few days and in the weeks ahead,” a Lifeblood spokesperson said.

But even with a total of 26,000 donations and 90,000 appointments made in the wake of the Bondi shootings, Lifeblood is rallying Aussies to keep up the mammoth effort.

“The need for more blood and plasma donors is ongoing. In the event of a serious trauma event or emergency, up to 100 donations may be needed to save just one life,” a Lifeblood spokesperson said.

In statistics obtained by NewsWire, Lifeblood revealed what states were most generous in the 72 hours after the tragedy.

NSW topped the rankings with a staggering 7897 donations, with Victoria closely behind at 6918 and Queensland in third at 4790.

Nearly 25,000 first-time donors put their best arm forward and made an appointment.
