Israeli officials are reportedly investigating any links between Iran and the murder of an MIT nuclear physics professor who specialized in nuclear science, an Israeli newspaper claims.

Prof. Nuno Loureiro, 47, was gunned down in his Brookline, MA, apartment on Monday, with little progress made so far in solving his murder.

An Israeli investigation was reportedly launched against the backdrop of Loureiro’s research in energy and nuclear physics, a notable topic of interest for Tehran, The Jerusalem Post reported.

The alleged investigation, however, has not been officially verified nor is it supported by any findings from US investigators, the newspaper said.

There is also no clear evidence so far linking Loureiro’s murder to Iran or its intelligence operation, sources told the JPost.

Loureiro, a father-of-three, was at his home at around 8:30 p.m. on Monday when several gunshots rang out at the foyer of his apartment complex.

He was found bloodied and lying on the ground by his stunned neighbors, who quickly called first responders to transport the wounded scientists to a local hospital, where he died.

There is no evidence at this time tying the murder to Iranian Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his intelligence network. AP

Loureiro, a theoretical physicist and fusion scientist, joined MIT in 2016 and was appointed deputy director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center in 2022.

A native of Viseu, Portugal, he was named last year to lead MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center, where he worked to advance clean energy technology and other research, according to the university.

While Loureiro’s death has triggered speculation and theories on social media, local cops have yet to reveal any suspects or motive for the murder.
