Well-known fashion designer Prabal Gurung collaborated with Boll & Branch, a leading luxury bedding brand, to build a unique red-carpet ensemble for The Costume Institute’s 2024 Met Gala. Worn by the former tennis world champion Maria Sharapova, the gown merges together both Boll & Branch’s fabrics with Gurung’s smart sartorial sensibilities.
Crafted solely from Boll & Branch’s organic cotton fabric, the off-the-shoulder, daffodil yellow gown takes inspiration from the vividness and softness of garden flowers. The outline presents a deep neckline and bands of hand-cut bias organic cotton in a variety of sizes, all sewn by hands onto a base to make an exclusive textile fabric. An off-the-shoulder taffeta opera cape, comprising rosette detail and train, completes the collection. Roughly 20 yards of Boll & Branch fabric and more than 300 hours went into the creation of the dress.
Gurung shared, “When I first heard about the Sleeping Beauty theme, I thought, wouldn’t it be great to do something symbolic by collaborating with someone in that world who truly understands materials?”
Prabal Gurung shared his motivation for the partnership, stressing on Boll & Branch’s luxurious cotton fabric and its association with the Met Gala’s theme. Besides the design, Gurung and Boll & Branch share values of sustainability, philanthropy, traceability, and impact, with both brands having South Asian roots.
Missy Tannen, Founder & Chief Product Officer at Boll & Branch, highlighted the shared interest for craftsmanship and process between the two brands. “Prabal and I both proceed towards design with persistent consideration to create designs that are not only gorgeous, but also soulful.”
Boll & Branch, established in 2014 by Scott and Missy Tannen, concentrates on changing the luxury home textiles industry by classifying ethical sourcing and production.
