Tom Sachs has brought back his original “boring” sneaker.
The Tom Sachs x Nike General Purpose Shoe “Studio” has been restocked three years after its debut release. It was the first colorway for the silhouette, which was designed to be simple and functional. Color is largely eschewed, as the upper makes use of shades of white, cream and gray. A tab midsole sits above a black outsole, while tongue and heel pulls appear in blue.
Marketing for the General Purpose Shoe hailed the shoe as “boring” and delivered the manifesto: “Your sneakers shouldn’t be the most exciting thing about you. They are tools, and what matters about your tools is that they work.”
Aside from utility, the artist also wanted the General Purpose Shoe to be more accessible following the hype of his Mars Yard 2.0. He delivered by making the yellow colorway available to purchase at Kohl’s later in the year, and a brown variant followed in 2023 along with another in white, yellow and black.
Releases were halted in the wake of workplace allegations that caused Nike to pause its relationship with Sachs until this year. As part of the ISRU program requiring participation to purchase the Mars Yard 3.0, Sachs then made a “Participation” edition available for preorder for app users who didn’t earn the chance to purchase the new Mars Yard.
The Tom Sachs x Nike General Purpose Shoe “Studio” is available to purchase now on Tom Sachs’ website. Pricing is set at $110.
